Allotropy and Allotropes of Carbon

Allotropy and Allotropes:

The phenomenon of the existence of a substance in various physical forms but with the same chemical properties is called Allotropy and the different forms are called Allotropes.

Allotropes of Carbon:

Carbon exists in the following allotropic forms.

i. Diamond:
It is a hard, beautiful crystalline substance.

ii. Graphics: It is a soft, greyish black crystalline substance.

iii. Amorphous Carbon: Black residue left when carbon compounds are heated. Different varieties of amorphous carbon are:

  • Coal
  • Coke
  • Wood charcoal
