Basic Principles and Applications of Holography


Holography is the process by which the three-dimensional image of an object is recorded on a tow-dimensional plate. The image on the 2D plate is called a Hologram.

Basic Principles of Holography:

The reflected or scattered waves from an object are directed towards a photographic plate. Simultaneously, another coherent waves, called reference wave of some wavelength. It directed towards the plate without striking the object. These two waves interface on the photographic plate and produce interference fringes, characteristics of the object. The recorded intensity pattern has both the amplitude and phase recorded 3D image in it.

Applications of Holography:

1. In double exposure holographic interferometry.

2. In holographic laser microscopy.

3. In pulsed laser photography.

4. In data storage device.

5. In acoustic holography.

6. In character recognition.
