It is a common experience that when a lift suddenly starts moving up, a man inside the lift experiences an apparent increase in his weight. On the other hand, when the lift suddenly starts moving down, a loss in weight appears to take place. This feeling of gain or loss in weight is due to the change in the upward reaction of the man to the floor of the lift.
